Hi, I’m the founder of ISEIN. My name is Jacney Chan. I’m also a documentary filmmaker.
Six years ago, I made a short documentary about my relationship with my mother. For a long time, I believed my childhood sadness was caused by her. Only through filming did I begin to understand her life—shaped by years of patriarchal pressure, emotional control, and a constant search for recognition she never received. I was not the cause of her pain, but an extension of it.
At the end of the film, I hugged my mother for the first time. That one minute is still the most intense minute of my life.
My mom’s story is not unique. It reflects the reality of many middle-aged women in China who grew up within patriarchal systems. Today, more and more women of her generation are beginning to reclaim their freedom.
As mothers, they are often remembered only as busy silhouettes. And I made a jadeite necklace for women like my mom. The doorframe form of this piece represents a choice: facing darkness, light is blocked; facing the light, the silhouette is illuminated—and the jadeite allows light to pass through.
This is a necklace for women who forget, or were never told that they could choose the light.
